Instrument Errors - Baumer Level Sensor Incorrect Readings
Check to see if there is any oil buildup at the end of the sensor snout. Hold a tissue to the end of the snout. Normally this will remove any oil that has collected there and will restore normal operation if oil build-up is indeed the source of the problem.
For a more thorough cleaning the sensor mounting block can be removed from the Z-Axis and then the sensor removed from the mounting block. Once free the sensor snout can be removed from the sensor body by twisting it through 45 degrees. The actual sensor looks like a white pencil eraser and if oil has built up on the sensor then the oil can be rinsed off with a jet of heptane from a wash bottle. The sensor should then be air dried for a few minutes before being reassembled and restored to its mounting.
NOTE: If you remove the sensor then ensure that you mark its position before removal so it can be remounted in the same place otherwise the sensor off-set parameter will need to be adjusted.
The sensor mounting block is held in place by two 6-32 socket head cap screws so a 5/64 Allen key is needed to remove them. The screws are most easily accessed if the sampling head is at sample position number 104. The sensor is secured into its mounting with a single M3 screw that is accessible from the base of the mounting. It can be removed without removing the mounting block from the Z-Axis but you need some “stubby” tools to do so. The M3 screw will either be a Phillips (star) screw (on earlier instruments) or an M3 SHC (later instruments).
